The Sul Ross State University Department of Nursing was provided with lab equipment worth more than $2,700 from the Permian Basin Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Intravenous start kits, tourniquets, syringes, needles, tubing and simulated medication dosages were among the equipment. The PBAHEC representative also explained that several scholarships are available to Sul Ross’ nursing students. The center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, serves 27 counties in West Texas.

AHEC’s mission is to address the health care provider shortage and improve health care access in the Permian Basin and the Concho Valley through education and development of the health care workforce. Goals include introducing secondary education students to health careers, providing clinical training in rural and underserved communities for students pursuing a health profession, supporting health care providers and organizations with continued education, recruiting assistance and other activities, and promoting health living in the communities they serve.
