Welding shop owners share love of learning Celtic culture

Double R Welding Supply owners, Reba and Robert Preston, have spent the last decade learning about their Irish and Scottish heritage.

They married 42 years ago in Fort Stockton at the Small Community Hall in Rooney during one of the worst ice storms on record, said Robert.

They have been together for 44 years after meeting at Tarleton State University where Reba was studying criminal justice and Robert was studying history.

They bought Double R Welding Supply from Reba's parents in 2009. who had owned it since 1984.

They sell welding supplies, industrial and medical gases, with just the two of them working for the company.

Before owning the business, Robert worked in the oil field.

They have a daughter, two cats and two dogs and just like to be in each others company.

“There's no such thing as a day off,” said Robert.

For the last 10 years, they have been involved in Celtic festivals, starting with one in Odessa and Midland.

The first fair they spent walking around and checking it out.

The next year they decided to look into what clan they were, finding out it was a Scottish clan of Macduff.

A clan is a close-knit group of interrelated families.

“We've been going there ever since,” said Reba.

They now host the MacDuff tent where they have books and help people look up their last name and genealogy.

The festival covers seven Celtic nations, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, The Isle of Man and Galicia.

“It is fun, you get to meet a lot of people,” said Reba. “You need to come to a Scottish Irish Fair once in your life.”

They will spend the whole weekend in Midland in March and it is something they plan to continue.

Now, Robert is really into the heritage, even wearing kilts and owning four.

“There's just something about a guy in a kilt, that women really love,” said Reba.

They say the festival normally brings around 2,000 people and with Robert loving history it was a great fit for a hobby.

“My idea of fun is sitting down and reading a history book,” said Robert.

Robert is also a certified safety officer for the muzzle loading artillery and volunteers locally at the Fort.

The West Texas Celtic Fair is on March 14 and 15 at the Midland Horseshoe Pavilion, 2514 Arena Trail in Midland.

Double R Welding Supply is located at 2111 W. Dickinson Blvd. They can be reached (432) 360-4086.
