The Fort Stockton Pioneer won four awards in the 2019 West Texas Press Association contest.

The Pioneer competed in the large weekly category, which included papers from Azle, Dublin, Hico, Ozona, Hamilton, Big Lake, Springtown, Devil's River, Eldorado and others.

The Pioneer's awards were:

• 1st: Advertising Composition

• 2nd: General Excellence

• 2nd: Special Section

• 3rd: Sports Coverage

"The biggest award is having people read and see value in a community newspaper's work," said Pioneer Publisher Steve Fountain. "Being recognized by the WTPA is an honor, but it is also a reminder that we need to continue to push forward to better serve Pecos County."

The Pioneer did not win an award in the previous WTPA contest.

WTPA is considered the “largest regional association in the world” because of its vast geographic area. The Association is composed of weekly, semi-weekly and small daily newspapers in the great West Texas area with Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, Hondo, Gatesville, Perryton, Vernon, Burkburnett, Decatur and Dallas being the fringe area cities.
