The Texas Department of Criminal Justice Lynaugh Unit in Fort Stockton held a memorial service for fallen officers last week.
Once a year the department holds an appreciation week and remembrance for current and past officers.
“It's just kind of a tribute to all of the fallen,” said Warden Kenneth Putnam.
This year Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter was the guest speaker and remembered the officers who have died or been killed in the line of duty this year including Midland police officer Nathan Heidelberg.
“It's a very sad time and a very hard time when things like that happen,” said Painter.
He also offered words for the correctional officers who deal with convicted felons on a daily basis.
“Stay on your toes, listen to whats happening and pay attention,” he said. “Always stand up for your fellow officer.”
