Sanchez falls in opener of state tennis tournament

Fort Stockton High School senior Darryn Sanchez lost his opening-round match of the UIL state tournament by scores of 6-1, 6-1 to Victor Nguyen of Lamar Fulshear.

Sanchez was attempting to become the first Panther since Luke Epps in 2001 to win a state tennis championship.

Sanchez won the 4A-Region 1 championship to advance to state.

In 1A Girls, Kailey Dominguez and Carsyn Evans of Buena Vista High School in Imperial will compete for the state 1A girls doubles title.

The duo faces Raina Short and Zoey Ruiz of Lenorah Grady at 12:30 p.m . today in the quaterfinals. The winners advance to the 4:30 p.m. semifinals against the winner of the match between Abby Geye and Caryn Lawrence of Rising Star and Kadyn Jones and Sarah Esquivel of Knippa.

The finals will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 17.

Dominguez and Evans won the 1A-Region 1 title.

All matches are being played at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and the Omar Smith Intramural Tennis Center at Texas A&M University.
