Pecos County high schools finish strong at state track meet

Buena Vista relay team claims title; Panthers, Iraan medal

Pecos County's three high schools may not have sent many student athletes to the 2019 state championship track and field meet, but those that went made their presence known.

• Buena Vista High School's boys 4x400 relay team claimed a state 1A championship. The team featured Valentino “Tino” Martinez, Byram Caballero, Lalo Gardea and Josh Rodriguez. It was a big jump for the team, which had placed second at the 1A-Region 1 meet. Caballero also took fourth at state in the 800. He had won the championship at the regional meet.

• Fort Stockton High School's Pedro Vasquezearned a bronze medal in the 4A boys 400-meter dash. He had entered the meet with the 7th-fastest time among the 16 finalists. He was the 4A-Region 1 champion.

• Iraan High School's Colbi Maurer took home a bronze medal in the pole vault. She is the 2A-Region 1 champion.
