Midland Christian 87, Panthers 39


The Fort Stockton High School Panthers basketball team lost its season-opener, 87-39, on the road against Midland Christian Tuesday, Nov. 27.

The team, which barely started practice last week due to the playoff run of the football team, wasn’t certain if it would play an official game or have a scrimmage.

Nick Johnson led the Panthers with 12 Panthers.

Head coach Sammy Soliz said he was impressed with the defensive play of Brian Gonzales, Osbaldo Wislar and Cesar Trejo. The team took four charges on the game.

Up next for the Panthers will be Sweetwater and Lamesa on Thursday, Nov. 29 in the Lamesa Tournament followed by Dumas on Friday, Nov. 30 and Wall on Saturday, Dec. 1.

• Junior varsity: The Panthers lost their opener, 54-28, to Midland Christian. The team was led in scoring by Dominique Aguilar with seven points. Kobi Mireles also played a strong backcourt game scoring six points. The team will participate in the Marfa Varsity tournament this weekend.

• Freshmen: The team lost to Midland Christian 45-18. Devon Rodriguez had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals. Defensively, the Panthers had 9 steals, including two by Bryan Garcia, to create scoring opportunities. The Panthers are home Dec. 4 against Presidio.
