May 4 election candidate filing ends today


Voters in Pecos County are getting ready for the upcoming May 4 elections in both Fort Stockton and Iraan. In Fort Stockton there will be an election for City of Fort Stockton Mayor, two City Council seats and three Fort Stockton Independent School District (FSISD) School Board seats.

City of Fort Stockton

The field of candidates vying for two council seats grew to six with incumbent Dino Ramirez filing his paperwork Wednesday, Feb. 13 and Ross Harper filing his paperwork Friday, Feb. 15.

Also running for re-election is incumbent Ruben Falcon and challengers Paul Casias, Oscar Hernandez and Mike Stallard.

In the race for Mayor, Mary Ann Terrazas White remains the only challenger to incumbent Chris Alexander.

Each of the seats will be for a two-year term. Candidate bios will be published in The Pioneer once the filing deadline has passed.

Early voting will take place at the City Hall building, 121 W. 2nd St, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., beginning Monday, April 22 and ending Tuesday, April 30.

FSISD School Board

The Fort Stockton Independent School District (FSISD) has three board of trustees seats up for grabs in the May election.

Contested seats will be for the seats currently held by Freddy Martinez of Ward 2, Anastacio “Nacho” Dominguez of Ward 3 and Sandra Marquez of Ward 5.

According to Election Clerk Ember Renteria, all three board members will be running for re-election. No challengers have field papers to date.

City of Iraan

Like Fort Stockton, two council seats and the mayor are up for election.

Feb. 12. Iraan will also be electing a mayor and two City Council seats. Vera Carter has filed paperwork for mayor. Current mayor Darren Brown has said he will not seek re-election.

Current councilman Jerry Carter said he will not seek re-election. The other council seat is held by Karina Browning. It is not yet know if she will run.

No other candidates have filed papers.

Iraan-Sheffield School Board

There are three positions open on the Iraan-Sheffield School board – seats currently held by Margaret Holmes, John Graham and Joe Sconiers.

Holmes has filed her papers. Graham said he will step down, while Sconiers has not announced his plans.

Iraan Hospital Board

Two seats are open on the Iraan Hospital Board. Della Alldredge’s seat is vacant since she is no longer a resident of Iraan. Incumbent Roy Lee Alldredge has filed to run for re-election. Alldredge filled a vacated seat about a year ago, but will be running this round. Kathleen Parmer has turned in her application to run on the hospital board as well.

Anyone wanting to run for one of these positions in Iraan, may pick up an application packet at the Iraan City office, Iraan-Sheffield School Administration office or Iraan General Hospital.
