OZONA – The Iraan Braves improved to 2-0 under first-year head coach Corby Maurer, overcoming rain and an early Ozona Lions touchdown to post the 35-15 win.
Ozona scored the first and last touchdowns of the game on passes of 29 and 75 yards.
In between, Iraan was in control with it defense posting 14 points on two touchdowns and a safety.
Brody Myers scored on a touchdown run to pulled within 7-6. The Braves missed the PAT.
The Braves took the lead for good on the next series as Dylan Kent recovered a Lions fumble for the go-ahead score. Iraan converted the 2-point conversion to make it 14-7 with 2:22 left in the first.
The Lions lost three of four fumbles in the game.
The Braves went up 27-7 at the half with two Myers’ touchdowns in the second quarter. The Braves had one extra point blocked.
The Braves’ defense accounted for the second half scoring as lineman Isaac Mendoza scooped up an Ozona fumble and returned it about 15 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was missed, making the score 33-7.
The defense added a safety for the final 35-7 margin.
The Lions totaled 224 yards of offense. They were 3-for-6 passing for 110 yards and two touchdowns. They rushed for 144 yards on 27 carries – with seven runners carrying the ball.
The Braves are back home Friday, Sept. 14 for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Menard Yellowjackets (1-1), who bounced back from a season-opening 6-0 loss to Cross Plains for a 40-18 win over Baird.
