George W. Daugherty, age 96, son of the late John and Rosie Daugherty, was born in Atoka, Oklahoma on November 6, 1922. He was called to his Heavenly Home to be with his wife of 69 years, Alpha Mae Daugherty, on January 5, 2019.
George proudly and honorably served his country during WWII, where he was severely injured in France in 1944. At the time of his injury, he served as a T-Sgt in Gen. George S. Patton’s 3rd Army. He received two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and numerous other metals and unit citations. In support of his fellow wounded veterans, George and his wife Mae were very active in the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 5. Both volunteered over 10,000 hours at Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital.
George was the owner/operator of Imperial Water Supply in Imperial, Texas until 1963 when he moved to San Antonio, Texas.
Known as Pawpaw to his grandchildren, they knew he had the gifted ability to fix and repair everything around the house and he was always delighted when they brought something to be repaired. He was always positive and caring for others before himself.
George is predeceased by his parents, his wife and three brothers.
He is survived by his children, Delton Daugherty, wife Lea of Ft. Davis, TX, Barbara Keelan, husband Jim and son Walton Daugherty, wife Patty, all of San Antonio, TX; 7 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at Inspiration Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation and the staff at Community Life Center at Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital.
Please join the family for visitation on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. A prayer service will begin at 7:00 PM. A procession will depart from the funeral home the following morning, Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at 10:00 AM for Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery where a committal service with military honors is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM (Shelter #3).
