Garage hosts 'Wizarding' event Saturday

It’s going to be a magical Labor Day weekend in town as The Garage, Coffee, Music & More at 1110 N Main St is hosting a full day of fun Saturday, Sept.1. The “Wizarding World of Fort Stockton” art show kicked off Tuesday, Aug. 28 and will continue until Saturday, Sept. 1 ending in a big full-day event.

The indoor art show showcases all Harry Potter inspired work by 12 local and regional artists, from hobbyists to professionals, and all pieces are for sale with a portion of sales benefiting the Fort Stockton Association for the Support of Local Arts & Music.

“I’ll have five paintings in the art show,” said local artist Laura Thornton. “I did an oil painting, a traditional graphite drawing, one with markers and a quote, and one with water colors and ink. I tried to do each one with a different style. My favorite is the one I did with markers and a quote, it’s called ‘Magic Inside Us’ and it was really fun to do,” she said.

Come Saturday, the Garage is going to be transformed into Hogwarts, the school of witchcraft and wizardry that’s featured in the Harry Potter series, with the Garage’s Music Hall to become the Hogwarts’ “Great Hall” from the books and movies.

“We’ll have the hanging candles in here just like the Great Hall,” said owner Renee Gaylor. “We’ll have banners hung and during the event on Saturday there will be a ‘Magical Beasts’ scavenger hunt, so there will be lurking creatures for everyone to try to find. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” she said.

Gaylor had a smile from ear-to-ear as she explained how the theme came about and the schedule for the upcoming free event this Saturday.

“In the Harry Potter books, back to school day falls on the first of September,” said owner Renee Gaylor. “With the first falling on a Saturday, it just seemed perfect. The idea for a Harry Potter themed event came from Sarah Shuttleworth. She was thinking more along the trivia night, something small that we could do, but then just become something bigger. The more we got together to talk about it and brainstorm – it turned into a full day event,” she said.

Going into detail on some of the vendors, Gaylor revealed that the booths will be just as enchanted as the event.

“The Fort Stockton Cake Lady will be here with some wizard theme treats, there be a variety of craft items such as adorable crocheted owls, chocolate frogs, and the Bertie Botts beans of course. We’re having a Bertie Botts beans guess the flavor of jelly bean contest, not for the faint of heart. You have no idea what flavor you could get. You could eat a booger flavored jelly bean. It’s a try at your own risk contest,” said Gaylor with a laugh.

Dust off your wands, iron your robes and join in the fun on Saturday, Sept. 1 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a variety of activities, contests and games.
