Commitment to the customers and enjoyment of his job has kept Jimmy McCasland with McCoys Building Supply for about 21 years.
McCasland, 62, is the manager at McCoys location on North U.S. Highway 285 in Fort Stockton. He moved here 11 years ago.
“I really like what I do,” said McCasland.
McCasland, who is from Plain View, was in the Air Force for 16 years before starting to work at various McCoys in Odessa and Plain View.
While in the Air Force he had the opportunity to work in Alaska, Louisiana and England, where his daughter was born.
He went right to work after getting out of the service.
The Fort Stockton location has 15 employees who McCasland said are customer focused.
“It's not about the bottom line,” said McCasland. “People are first.”
One of the interesting aspects, according to McCasland, is the friendly competition between McCoys and Wallace Lumber.
He said that they know they can call each other if there is something a customer needs that they don't have.
“It's all about the customer service,” said McCasland.
One of the fun parts about working at McCoys are the regular customers, he said.
The employees and the company have also been a huge help through all of McCasland's hardships.
In a short time span McCasland lost his wife of 41 years, his mom and his dad.
While he has four kids and several grandkids, he said he is still trying to navigate life without his love and McCoys was helpful during the whole process.
“If I needed to take time off I did,” he said. “They were very supportive.”
McCasland said he plans to work for another two to four years before retiring and getting re-certified to teach various gun safety courses.
He also preoccupies his time with the Fort Stockton Lion's Club.
For now, he will continue to serve the people who come in for the lumber yard needs.
“I like being here and interacting with the customers,” said McCasland.
