Community unites to open Domestic Violence Awareness month

October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness month. In addition to the symbolic silhouettes annually put around the downtown area, a Domestic Violence Awareness month kick-off ceremony was held Wednesday morning at the steps of the Pecos County Courthouse.

The event began with a prayer led by Pastor Victor Lopez of Gracepoint Church, followed by speakers: Pecos County Judge Joe Shuster, Police Chief Ryan Skelton, County Attorney Frank Lacy, 83rd District Judge Robert Cadena and Satellite Shelter Supervisor Veronica Lopez.

After Shuster proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness month in Pecos County and Pastor Lopez closed the ceremony in prayer, a meaningful balloon release of purple and white balloons hit the sky to honor those impacted by domestic violence.

The Crisis Center of West Texas and the local Lilah Smith Safe House staff appreciates everyone who attended to show their support.
