The Buena Vista High School girls cross country team took second place in the UIL State 1A Girls cross country meet held Nov. 9 in Round Rock.
Cumby Miller Grove won the state title with 54 points, placing three runners among the top six finishers – including first and second place – and five runner in the top 28.
Buena Vista, which won the Region 2 title, finished with 111 points, 24 points ahead of third-place Ackerly Sands.
Top finishers for the Longhorns on the two-mile course were freshman Ireland Sanchez (8th, 12:40.72); sophomore Mariana Sanchez (15th, 13:06.32); sophomore Kylie Dominguez (23rd, 13:24.89); sophomore Melissa Rodriguez (24th, 13:26.85); sophomore Fernanda Malagon (41st, 13:42.61); and sophomore Melanie Malagon (88th, 15:13.78).
The team is coached by Jacob Benavidez.
In 1A boys, Buena Vista's Matthew Pena finished 48th on the three-mile course with a time of 17:52.32.
In 2A girls, Iraan high School's Emily McGhee took 33rd
with a time of 12:59.73.
Also competing Saturday for Buena Vista will be Matthew Pena, who qualified as an individual with a 4th-place finish in the
Emily McGhee in the girl's 2A meet.
